Michael M. Smith

Michael M. Smith is the visionary founder and president of the Hayah R.I.S.S.E. Foundation—Reaching Internationally for Social and Spiritual Elevation. With over three decades of ministry, leadership and nonprofit experience, Michael launched the foundation to address the urgent needs of underserved communities both locally in Virginia and abroad in West Africa.

Under his leadership, the foundation has helped transition unhoused individuals into stable housing, improved educational resources for rural schools in Ghana, and built partnerships that demonstrate the practical love of Christ. His work with Nyame Bekyere Christian School and other African institutions has led to infrastructure growth, digital transformation, and long-term support for hundreds of students.

Michael combines strategic thinking with hands-on service, believing that true impact comes from sustained relationships, holistic care, and a spirit of humility. His background as a worship pastor and global missions leader uniquely informs his approach to nonprofit leadership—balancing compassion with execution, and vision with measurable results. The foundation’s motto, “Helping People Rise Higher,” mirrors his own life’s work: lifting others through love, leadership, and lasting partnerships.
